Officials and their supporters had planned to assemble at their offices in Rukungiri town and lead a procession to the municipal stadium, where the national Independence Day celebration are ongoing.

Shortly after the celebrations, the party officials were expected to address a rival rally and hand out bicycles to all FDC women league leaders from the lower levels. But Ingrid Turinawe, the FDC women league chairperson says they have decided to call off their planned rally. She however, didn’t give details for the change of heart.

Early this morning, Kizza Besigye, the former FDC president addressed FDC officials and supporters about his decision to attend the national celebrations, where he was invited. By the time of filing this story, Besigye had already made his way to the stadium in the company of Erias Lukwago, the Kampala lord mayor.

Ely Maate, Kigezi regional police spokesperson told URN that everything was under control. This year’s independence celebration is being held under the theme “Re-energizing Uganda’s Development, Potential-Middle Income Status Achievable”.
