The Ghana FA has disclosed that their star striker player and captain Asmoah Gyan is doubtful for the game against Senegal on Monday in the on-going 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).

He was reportedly unable to train with the squad for the past two days because he is suffering from a mild bout of malaria.

Gyan was admitted to hospital in Mongomo in Equatorial Guinea on Saturday night and was released on Sunday morning. The illness was detected at an early stage and Gyan is responding well to treatment.

Doctors will continue to monitor his progress ahead of the Black Stars opening Group C match against Senegal in Mongomo.

Former coach of English Premier League side Chelsea Avrant Grant will face his first true test since he took over the Ghana team. Ghana who have won the Afcon trophy four times will now look to the Ayew brothers Jordan Pierre and Andre together with Mubarak Wakasu who plies his trade with Celtic in Scotland.

For the Senegal team that has never won the Afcon trophy, they will look to the English Premier League based players Cheikhou Kouyate, Mame Biram Biram Diof, Papiss Demba Cisse and Sadio Mane.

The second Group C match at the Mongomo Stadium will pit in-form Algeria and 1996 Champions Bafana Bafana of South Africa.

Algeria who were the only African team to reach the knock out stage of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil will not be an easy team for South Africa to tame. But the Bafana Bafana team will also bring lots of motivation having been among just one of the teams that made it through the Afcon qualifiers unbeaten.
