President Yoweri Museveni has bewailed the lack of seriousness among Africans in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
The President revealed this on Friday while addressing a public rally at Kaberamaido District headquarters.
“I am really tired of lack of seriousness among Africans. Bishops, religious leaders, parents and the community; how can our children die like this when we are all around? Children must be told the dangers”, he stressed.
President Museveni called on parents and leaders to guide their children and help them guard against the deadly HIV/AIDS pandemic. He particularly appealed to the youth to live purposeful lives.
In related news, President Yoweri Museveni has strongly advised people living near swamps in the country to refrain from cultivating at the edges of those swamps but instead utilize those areas for opening up fish ponds.
“I would like the edges of all swamps in the country to be turned into fish ponds. They should not be at the centre of the swamps but at the edges”, he advised.
The President was yesterday opening one of the modern fish hatcheries in Ojama village of Anyara Sub-County in Kaberamaido district in Teso Sub-Region. He donated the hatchery to Ojama Fish Farming Group that has 31 members in 2008 during his visit to the area.
According to the Chairman of the group, Mr. John Robert Engoru Anguran, they have 19 fish ponds for both tilapia and cat fish species and their projected earnings will be Shs.100 million annually.
President Museveni who on arrival toured the hatchery, and highly commended the Group for the progress made and pledged to provide them with a food mixer for the fish, a fridge and electricity connection that is in the vicinity of the fish project.
“You people of the area are sitting on gold but you don’t have spectacles to see. Once you go fishing, you will not go wrong. The same project will be rolled out to other areas that have vast swamps like in Lango and Busoga”, he said.
In March 2010, Bududa was hit by devastating landslide killing scores of residents with the worst affected being Nametsi village where reports indicated more than 300 people were feared buried by mud and thousands were displaced. The Government relocated most of the survivors to Kiryandongo district in Bunyoro Sub-Region.
“Don’t oppose God’s work. We don’t want to be in opposition to God. It is a risky business. The landslides, like the one in Kabale that has blocked the road, come from opposing God. It is only tea, whose roots hold the soil, that can be grown on the mountains”, the President advised.
President Museveni, who had earlier laid a foundation stone for the construction of Kaberamaido Technical Institute and also commissioned one of the buildings at the Institute, launched yet another power line joining Lwala – Kaberamaido to Amolatar district.
The President appealed strongly to the people of the area to utilize the facility for eradicating poverty by starting small businesses. He advised them to borrow funds from their SACCOs and open up welding workshops, have refrigerators for chilling juice and also operate maize mills.
The ceremony was attended by Cabinet Ministers, MPs, the district leadership of Kaberamaido and the neighboring districts.
