ICC: Burundi Decision To Quit Regrettable

Burundi’s plan to withdraw from the International Criminal Court (ICC) has been described by the by the body which oversees the work of the court as a “setback in the fight against impunity”.

Last week, Burundi’s parliament approved a cabinet plan to cut ties with the Hague-based court.

Former Senegalese justice minister Sidiki Kaba, who heads the ICC’s governing body, called on Burundi to discuss its concerns rather than pull out of the court.

Last year, African Union heads of state approved a proposal to look at ways that Africa could leave the ICC as a bloc.

There has been a complaint that it unfairly targets African issues. All the active cases concern the continent.
