At least five people including four police officers were injured in a Friday morning motor accident involving the convoy of Lt General Kale Kayihura, the Inspector General of Police.

According to eyewitnesses, the lead car of Kayihura’s four-vehicle convoy had a head-on collision with a truck at around 9:15am at Mayanja trading centre in Kawanda on the Kampala-Luweero highway.

Kayihura was heading to Nakasongola district for the International Women’s Day event when one of his cars was hit by a trailer registration number KBD 547N.

An eye-witness, Ivan Debo, says the trailer was over-taking another trailer registration number ZC 9346 when the convoy lead car, a pickup truck UP2406 with a siren rammed into it.

The driver and four other police officers have sustained injuries and are currently admitted at Mulago hospital. Unconfirmed reports say that the truck driver sustained injuries after a beating from police officers and is currently being held at Kawempe police station.

Siraje Bakaleke, the Kawempe divisional police commander, told a URN reporter that the two trucks have been impounded by police and charges of attempted murder will be preferred against the drivers. He added that the incident is being treated as a ‘stage-managed’ accident and that investigations are ongoing. Bakaleke did not give the names of the injured police officers.

At the time of filing this report, traffic along the road had been held as the President’s convoy was expected to take the same route to the celebrations.

Kayihura survived the accident with no injuries and has proceeded to the celebrations in Nakasongola.

Last year, Kayihura’s convoy was involved in another accident that led to the death of two people in Lwengo district after his lead car knocked a motorcycle.
