Kadaga Launches Village Ambulance

Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga, the Speaker of Parliament has launched the Village Ambulance to help curb the high maternal mortality rates in the remote upcountry areas.
The ceremony took place in the CHOGM gardens on Tuesday 2nd February, 2015, was an initiative of PULSE as the manufacturer of the Village Ambulance in conjunction Amref Health Africa to control the prevailing high maternal mortality rates.
The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga, said the launch was an attempt to fulfill the MPs obligations to the constituencies.
“I encourage my fellow MPs to see if we can work together to build a budget line and become better advocates of village ambulances,” the Speaker said.
Jared White, Director Pulse Village Ambulances said the major objective of the launch at the Parliament was to advocate for government to make them available to the rural areas.
“We want to be part of Uganda’s goal in prioritizing maternal health to reduce maternal mortality rates in Uganda,” White said. “The village ambulances were able to transport over 230 expectant mothers to health centers last year,” he added.
Mr. White said Pulse Village Ambulances in partnership with Plan Uganda, Amref Health Africa and Red Cross Uganda were able to put into use 240 village ambulances the previous year.
Patrick Kagurusi, Deputy Director Amref Uganda said Amref Uganda was partnering with various players in the health sector to ensure that they save the lives of mothers.
“We partnered with Pulse Village Ambulances to supply 10 units to Soroti and Serere districts and they have performing very well,” Mr Kagurusi said.
Hon. Julius Maganda, representing Samia Bugwe county, South Busia, said he had written to World Vision which delivered two ambulances to his constituency.
“I encouraged local leaders to mobilize expectant mothers to open accounts at the health centres where they receive there antenatal care so as to access services of the village ambulances and I can reliably report that they have helped a lot,” Hon. Maganda said.
The Launch was facilitated by Pulse Village Ambulances, which has been producing the village ambulances since the year 2012.
