Kyambogo Sacks North Korean Professors

The United Nations Security Council last year made a resolution to put sanctions against North Korean following its November 29 launch of the Hwasong 15, an Intercontinental ballistic missile -ICBM that had the range to hit the east coast of the US.

Following the Missile launch, the UN Security Council on December 23, 2017 unanimously approved the sanctions targeting North Korea’s economy requiring that all countries expel North Korean workers not later than the end of 2019.

As a result, Prof. Katunguka highlights that the University was forced to prematurely end their contracts. The Koreans were attached to the science and engineering department.
Katunguka says that this has left major departments understaffed and that the university is yet to find their replacement.

At least 48 Professors are required to provide academic and research leadership in each of the University’s departments.

University authorities say they have only two professors who are both currently in administration Prof. Fabian Nabugoomu and Prof. Elly Katunguka.

According to Prof. Katunguka, the University Vice Chancellor the University currently has 16 associate professors arguing that they need more to provide the much needed experience and supervisory services as well as research for the university.

He further notes that because of the institution’s unsuccessful efforts to attract staff at the level of Associate and full professors in specialized areas of study, he was directed by Appointments Board and University Council to solicit for staff.

Following the directive, a team comprised of Chairman of Council, Chairperson of Appointments Board, Director Human Resources and the Vice Chancellor, visited Cuba between 26th of March and 2nd April 2018 to establish educational collaboration with Cuban Government.

“We visited Cuba with the view of searching for prospective scholars from Cuban Universities for recruitment into Kyambogo University service in the fields of Engineering, Science and Education,” Prof. Katunguka said.

According to Katunguka, recruitment of between 6-10 Cuban professors is expected to be concluded by August 2018 in the areas which were noted for consideration including Engineering, Science, Education, Vocational Studies, Special Needs and Rehabilitation and School of Management and Entrepreneurship.
