Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has filed four different law suits against The New Vision newspaper, claiming the publication defamed him in their various stories.

Lukwago, through his law firm of Lukwago and Company Advocates, filed the law suits before the High Court on Wednesday.

The stories that the Lord Mayor has complained of as being defamatory include one that appeared on February 11 under the headline “IGG probes Lukwago over Chinese Deal”. Another story that was published also mention Lukwago in a Shillings 3 billion abattoir fraud, while two other stories talk of “Plans to fire mayor Lukwago begin”, and “Lord Mayor is not informed-Musisi.”

Lukwago claims all the four stories are false and malicious.

He claims the stories have damaged his reputation as a former Member of Parliament, current Lord Mayor and lawyer. He is seeking for damages and a permanent injunction stopping any further publication of alleged defamatory stories against him.

The first law suit is in reference to a story in which the paper said Lukwago was allegedly being probed by the IGG for allegedly receiving  a bribe from the Chinese firm, Foton East Africa Ltd, to ensure that the firm gets the tender of supplying 100 garbage trucks and 300 buses to be used as public transport in Kampala. The story appeared on the front page of the state owned publication on February 11, 2013.

In the second law suit, Lukwago claims the publication that ran on Feburary 18, 2013, defamed him along with 17 others for allegedly collecting over 3.3 billion shillings from the city abattoir.

Court documents show that the alleged collection of the abattoir money happened between October 2011 and December 2012, when the Kampala Resident City Commissioner, Mpimbaza Hashaka, intervened.

Court has subsequently summoned the publication to file in its defense in respect to all the four suits within a period of 15 days upon receipt of summons before a hearing date can be fixed.
