The FIFA Ballon d’Or is an association football award given annually to the male player who is considered to have performed the best in the previous year. It is awarded based on votes by coaches and captains of international teams, as well as journalists from around the world.

The award started in 2010 after France Football’s Ballon d’Or and the men’s FIFA World Player of the Year award were merged.

The winner of the inaugural 2010 FIFA Ballon d’Or was Lionel Messi who then went on to reclaim the title the following two years.

The final three nominees for the Award this year are; Portugal skipper and Real Madrid player Cristiano Ronaldo, Argentina and Barcelona striker Lionel Messi and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer who helped Germany win the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

While Ronaldo played a key role for club and country in 2014 and also helped Real Madrid win their tenth UEFA Champions League, Messi was also in good form.

On his part Neuer who features for Germany champions Bayern Munich made numerous magnificent saves at the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil and helped his club win the Bundesliga title and DFB Cup.

Ex-Liberia and AC Milan striker George Oppong Weah is the only African to ever win the World player of the Year Award in 1995. Weah also won the European Player of the Year Award (1995) and three African player of the Year Awards (1989, 1994, and 1995).
