Njeru Municipality MP Lwanga Boosts Fight against COVID-19 with Ambulance, Medical Beds
The Njeru Municipality Member of Parliament (MP), National Unity Platform (NUP)’s Hon. Jimmy Lwanga alias ‘Embwa Yokukyalo’ has purchased an ambulance as part of his response to the COVID-19 pandemic in the constituency.
The indefatigable legislator, who is the former speaker of Njeru Municipality, also purchased motorcycles, mattresses and kitted patient beds that will equip St.Eliza Health center II in Wakisi Division.
The state-of-the-art ambulance that is up to the required international standards and will be officially handed over to the area health officials is equipped with modern equipment including portable stretcher, hand stretcher, oxygen tank, lights, and necessary medical supply drawers. The equipment’s high flexibility ensures emergency requirements, safe patient transport.
‘’ Matters of health emergencies have no party affiliations. When the NRM government neglects Uganda’s health sector which receives a meager resources, supporters of both the ruling party and the opposition suffer and in many cases die. With this standard ambulance , health workers will be able to reach further out to the communities and clinics in Njeru to save the lives of our people who are sick and need urgent transportation to the hospital,” said one of the health workers from Njeru Central Division.
Speaking to our reporter, Hon.Lwanga revealed that in partnership with St. Eliza School of Nursing and Midwifery and its medical facility at Malindi, they will also embark on a month-long educational drive on radio stations to raise awareness about COVID-19 so that people understand how to avoid contracting or spreading the virus.
‘’ We intend to use Village Health Teams (VHTs) to distribute Informational pamphlets and posters along with face masks to communities across the constituency. With the ambulance medical officials would now be able to rapidly respond to anyone who became seriously ill after contracting COVID-19 among other cases’’, said Lwanga.
Hon.Lwanga said in terms of Ambulance services, they have three divisions including Njeru Central, Wakisi and Nyenga and his plan was that if the area gets a state of the art ambulance, it would be good for easy referral services.
Dan Mugula, a former Councilor for Namuwaya zone told this website that private ambulances are useful for the ordinary person who cannot afford the cost of the government ambulance at the health facilities especially in Jinja since Njeru doesn’t have a referral Hospital.
‘’Hon.Lwanga is doing everything within his capacity as an MP to lessen the burden of his constituents in accessing quality health care. This is a timely intervention which will help us refer emergency cases on time for further medical attention’’, said Mugula.
Demand for ambulances and patient transport services have soared this year, amidst the surge of COVID-19 pandemic where the number of patients losing their lives because of poor ambulance services has been on the increase.
