Odoi Accuses Mbabazi of fuelling MUK strikes
fNational Resistance Movement (NRM), the ruling party Electoral Commission chairman, Dr. Tanga Odoi who is also a member of Makerere University council yesterday accused former Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi of fuelling the ongoing strikes at the University, an inside source has revealed told Red Pepper.
Tanga Odoi is believed to have said this yesterday during a University Council meeting called to resolve the impasse, after students were heard chanting Mbabazi’s name during the Monday strike.
“It was Tanga who mentioned it (that Mbabazi is behind strikes) in Council meeting yesterday,” a source said.
Makerere University Guild Information Minister Hon. Davidson Ndyabahika said that is unfortunate for the government which has refused to finance the institution to politicise the strike.
“We cannot tolerate the arrogance of some government officials in this university. Government refused to fund Makerere University in 1990 claiming they did not have money,” he said.
Adding; “they (government) instead advised the university to allow privatization and have private students, if government cannot afford to continue funding this university to the fullest then why do they push the burden to the parents down there.”
Davidson said that students leaders’ engaged them on the alternative idea of enabling students pay 60% by the 10th week, they refused. “Let them deal with it. We are also tired.”
Heavy Deployment
Police has heavily deployed at the university and surrounding areas quashing nascent demonstrations at night and today morning.
Today, the force fired rubber bullets and teargas to deter students from mobilisation and making large processions around the university.
The University Chief Security Officer Jackson Mucunguzi said that forces aiming at arresting all ring leaders, and that the University administration will close the institution if the crisis persists.
The University management is locked in a crisis meeting to find a solution.
