PLE Results Released, Mathematics is Worst Performed Subject

The Minister of Education Jessica Alupo on Monday released last year’s Primary Leaving Examination (PLE) results showing mathematics as the worst performed subject while English was the best performed followed by Social Studies and science respectively.
According to the released results, there was a 2% improvement in performance from 2011. 88.2% of the candidates passed in 2012 compared to 86.6% in 2011.
The results also showed that boys performed better than girls overall. 59,154 of the pupils passed in first division, 25,035 in second division, 103,174 in third division, 67,704 in forth division while over 60,000 were ungraded.
While speaking shortly after the release, Education minister Jessica Alupo said early marriages and defilement was still a major obstacle to girl education. She has also called for the amendment of the UNEB act.
She also added that the improved performance proved the critics of the Universal Primary Education wrong who have always claimed that its products are ‘half baked’.
While addressing the Press, Uganda National Examination Board Executive Secretary Mathew Bukenya said Results of 1,603 candidates have been withheld over suspected involvement of malpractice.
The affected students are from the districts of Wakiso, with schools including St Charles Lwanga Primary School with 163 pupils affected, Kibiri church of Uganda Primary School where 98, Norah Junior School 25.
Others are from Luwero District, including 77 pupils from Bombo Mixed Primary school, 1 from Lusenke Church of Uganda Primary School, Busiika Primary School 36, Ananonya orthodox 1, and Zirobwe Primary School 150.
Fortportal municipality was the best perfoming municipality with a 0.1% failure rate followed by Ntungamo 0.2%, Rukungiri 0.2%, Mbarara 0.3%, Entebbe 0.8%, Kabale 0.8%, Jinja 0.9%, Kaberamaido 1.2% and Rubirizi 1.3% district respectively.
Last year’s worst performing districts are Luuka with a 32.1% failure rate, Kween 30.5%, Namutumba 28.3%, Bukwo% 27.7%, Iganga 25.2%, Bulambuli 25.2%, Kalilo 24.6%, Kamuli 24.2%, Manafwa 23.9% and Kayunga 23.6%.
Fagil Mandy, the UNEB Board Chairman blamed for ignoring physical exercise and co-curricular activities and instead overburdening pupils with enormous homework which he said does not help in the learning process.
Selection of senior one candidates will take place on 31st January and 1st February at wonder world in Kansanga, Kampala.
