Police Warns FDC Against Processions In Rukungiri Town Ahead of Independence Day Celebrations

Police have warned supporters of the opposition Forum for Democratic against any attempts to lead a procession in Rukungiri Municipality ahead of the Independence Day celebrations. The national Independence Day celebrations will be held later today at Rukungiri municipal council stadium.

Ely Maate, the Kigezi regional Police Spokesperson says despite the fact that FDC supporters and their leaders have been invited for the national celebrations; they will not allow any processions. He says they have already learnt of a move by FDC supporters to match from their offices along Rukungiri Main Street through the town to the stadium.

Police has deployed heavily on the major streets leading to and out of Rukungiri town. The deployment comes amidst reports that Kizza Besigye, the former FDC president is scheduled to hold a parallel function at his country home in Rwakabengo village in southern Division –Rukungiri Municipality. Rwakabengo village is less that than a kilometer from Rukungiri stadium, where the main event is underway.

Sources in FDC indicate that the party supporters will assemble at their offices and lead a procession to the stadium since they were also invited. Kizza Besigye arrived in Rukungiri last evening amidst tight military and police escort. Meanwhile hundreds of residents have already started assembling at Rukungiri Municipal stadium for the national celebrations, where president Yoweri Museveni is expected to be chief guest.

  1. But what is wrong with this, I thought Independence was for everybody including FDC. Is not right for the FDC to take on the venue chosen by the ruling government for their own activities. To me that is somehow positive!
