The wife of renowned academic and Kampala University founder, Professor Badru Kateregga, has broken her silence and hit back hard at what she calls “false and malicious” accusations that she stole family property and fled with it to Rwanda.
In a strongly worded public statement issued on Monday, Mrs. Jolly Shubaiha Kateregga described the claims made by her husband as “completely baseless” and part of a “sustained smear campaign” meant to tarnish her reputation and unsettle her family.
“These allegations are not only entirely false and malicious, but they also form part of a broader, sustained smear campaign against me,” Mrs. Kateregga said.
The respected matriarch insists all properties in question — including vehicles, land titles, and other household assets — are safe and untouched at their matrimonial home in Buziga, where she still resides with their children.
Reports have been circulating — allegedly fueled by statements from Prof. Kateregga — suggesting that his wife stole family vehicles and key land titles and secretly moved them to Rwanda, sparking public intrigue and speculation.
But Mrs. Kateregga has now categorically denied the allegations, calling them “reckless, painful, and unsupported by any evidence.”
“None of the property has been moved, sold, or transferred unlawfully,” she stated.
“All of it remains at our matrimonial home, which is jointly owned and legally protected.
According to her statement, the Buziga residence is legally registered in both their names, meaning it cannot be sold or mortgaged without joint consent — a critical legal safeguard in any marital dispute.
“The home is jointly registered, and cannot be transferred without the consent of both parties, as provided for under the law,” she emphasizes.
Beyond the legal and financial angles, Mrs. Kateregga expressed emotional pain over the ordeal — especially for her children, who she says are suffering under the weight of public scrutiny and fear.
“These reckless accusations are deeply painful, not only to me but to our children, who continue to live in fear and distress as a result of this public vilification.”
She further accused her husband of abusing his public platform and influence, choosing media theatrics over legal channels to resolve family matters.
“Instead of using formal legal channels, Professor Kateregga has chosen to wage a media war. This is irresponsible and an abuse of his stature,” she said.
Mrs. Kateregga says she is ready to defend herself against all forms of defamation, intimidation, and misinformation, and called upon the media and general public to approach the matter with sensitivity and discernment.
“I trust that in due time, the truth will prevail, and justice will take its course,” she concluded.
The Katereggas, once regarded as a model couple in academia, have now found themselves at the center of a highly public — and painful — marital fallout.
