RETRACTION AND APOLOGY
On Monday, 8th December 2025, Red Pepper published an article alleging that Mr. Max Mwebembezi, a lawyer , was involved in a fraudulent gold transaction involving a Korean national relating to a purported 5kg gold deal. The article further alleged that Mr. Mwebembezi was presented as a legal representative of a company known as Zenith Cargo Century Minerals and that he received USD 10,000 through a law firm identified as Mujuzi & Co. Advocates. The publication also included Mr. Mwebembezi’s passport photo details.
Upon further review and verification, Red Pepper wishes to clarify that these allegations were incorrect and unfounded.
Red Pepper hereby confirms that:
Mr. Max Mwebembezi has absolutely no connection to Zenith Cargo, Century Minerals or the individuals mentioned in the alleged fraud.
He has never received any money, including the alleged USD 10,000, and has never participated in any gold-related transaction with any foreign national.
He has no professional or personal association with Mujuzi & Co. Advocates and has never worked with or for the said law firm.
The passport image and details published were used without his knowledge or authorization, and their publication was unjustified and misleading.
We acknowledge that the publication caused serious reputational damage, emotional distress, and professional embarrassment to Mr. Mwebembezi as a practicing advocate and to his law firm, Max Mwebembezi & Co. Advocates.
Red Pepper unreservedly retracts the false statements and issues a sincere and unconditional apology to Mr. Max Mwebembezi and Max Mwebembezi & Co. Advocates for all harm, distress, and inconvenience caused.
We reaffirm our commitment to responsible journalism, accuracy, and fairness, and we shall take corrective measures to prevent similar errors in future publications.
