Construction of the Soroti University has begun. Vice President Edward Ssekandi was on hand to officially kick off the building process on Friday.

Ssekandi was representing President Yoweri Museveni who was unable to oversee the start.

The 18.7 billion shillings project is being undertaken by a Chinese firm called Compliant Uganda Limited.

Soroti University will occupy part of the land that used to belong to Teso College Aloet.

Prof. Robert Odongo Ikoja, the Chairperson Soroti University Task Force Project, told our reporter that the university is expected to be complete in 24 months.

Proj. Ikoja said that the task force has already made a down payment of 20% of the contract sum to the Chinese contractors.

He added that the University Task force has already released down payment of 3.7 billion to the contractor as stipulated in the contract agreement.

Ikoja noted that the five storied building, which is 147 meters long and 30 meters high will cost government 18.7 billion Uganda shillings.

He said that the main building will have 14 lecture theatres, 6-8 laboratories, offices and stores.
