He famously sang the lyrics ‘Nzikokolima gali magi’, and it seems he’s managed to do just that. Many would ask what happened to Shaba Ranks copycat Toolaman Kibalama but the mark of a big time artiste is not how he makes it to the top but how he keeps relevant to his audience.
Indeed the Kyebando native is very good at this and his massive performance on the Mirinda Green Apple countrywide tour shows an interesting ability to make comebacks onto the local scene.
Germany-based Toolman and Big Music group supremo Big Eye have proven head-turners on the tour. The duo worked the crowds crazy in the Western towns of Kiboga and Ibanda towns.
The Ibanda bash being the last of a series of concerts that the brand has been taking to various towns like Hoima, Mityana, Kigumba, Kiryandongo, Bweyale was the biggest success as the crowd danced and sang in unison, song-by song, every time each of the musicians stepped on stage.
Toolman brought along his sidekick, Man Gazza and the duo did not disappoint, especially with “Kisumuluzo” on the playlist. Revelers sung along wholeheartedly as Toolman and Man Zagga schooled the dancers on the stage. Big Eye, the “Guwedekko” singer, also turned out to be a favorite among the Ibanda people as many were seen and heard asking for autographs and pictures.
According to Berna Kizza, the Mirinda brand manager, “Mirinda Green Apple is a new soft drink on the market and we feel that the bashes are a way of bringing the brand closer to our target audience and bringing out our thematic, which is ‘free your fun side’.”
While Toolman has certain limitations especially after changing base to Europe, he is certainly making things a little bit gluey at the crowd-pullers especially for the established status quo that is struggling with album launches, he may not be big in Kampala but in the countryside he’s a big name.
