The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) has postponed exams that were supposed to be sat by students today.

The decision comes shortly after the High Court in Kampala rejected a petition filed by two Muslims challenging the legality of the exams.

The two, Sadiki Kakaire and Suleiman Isotah Magumba, had sought for an interim court injunction arguing that for students to sit for the exams on a Muslim holy day would be contrary to the Constitution and the Public Holidays Act.

Today, 15th October 2013 Muslims all over the world are celebrating Eid-al-Adha. Eid al-Adha is the Festival of the Sacrifice and one of Islam’s most important religious holy days.

But Deputy Registrar of the High Court Tadeo Asiimwe rejected the application saying non-Muslim students interests had to be considered.

Asiimwe argued that it would be a great disservice to postpone exams that many students had already prepared themselves for.

Asiimwe reasoned that postponing the exams would also interfere with UNEB’s exam schedule.

Registrar Asiimwe, in his ruling, also noted that he had not come across any evidence of any Muslim students who claim that they will be affected if this application is not granted. Court ordered the two Muslims who went to court to pay costs to UNEB and Fagil Mandy.

However, at exactly, 21:14 hours, UNEB issued a press brief saying that the examinations had been postponed.

According to a brief issued by the UNEB Principal Public Relations Officer, Hamis Kaheru, no date has been fixed yet. He says a new date will be communicated in due course.

Senior four candidates were expected to sit for Chemistry, Music Aural and Energy and Power on Tuesday.

Affected students will now have to wait for a new date for sitting the exams to be communicated by UNEB.

The process is likely to delay the completion of the exams which were scheduled to end on 19th November 2013.
