UGANDA DECIDES: 16 Million Ballot Papers Arrive
The first batch of ballot papers for the 18th February presidential and parliamentary elections arrived in Uganda today afternoon.
The plane carrying the 16 million ballot paper batch touched down at Entebbe International Airport at at 1:30pm.
“I am grateful to the good Lord. The plane carrying 163 pallets worth 67, 000kgs touched down at 1.30pm. Originally, delivery was supposed to be 10am but a delay postponed arrival to 1pm.,” Electoral Commission chairman Badru Kiggundu said.
He said says weather down in South Africa necessitated a delay in departure.
The ballot papers will be transported to Electoral Commission ware house located in Banda-Kireka, a city suburb where they will be kept up to voting day.
Access to Ballot Papers
“Access to the warehouse will only be restricted to accredited people and Security will remain tight. Political parties can only avail two representatives to access Banda warehouse where ballots are going to be kept,” Kiggundu said.
Kiggundu blamed distrust among political groups as the reason why millions of dollars are being spent to import ballot papers.
“In a few countries of Africa, commissions have developed the capacity to print ballots, unluckily we are not among them.”
Kiggundu said he was part of the technical team that traveled to South Africa and approved printing process all the way.
He argued that the “South African company that printed ballots has done similar work for other countries and has a rich CV.”
