Uganda Pulls Out Of Africa Cup Of Nations|VOLLEYBALL
News coming our way indicates that financial woes have not speared the lately focused Uganda Volleyball Federation headed by Sadiq Nasiwu.
Just days after prospects to host the 2013 Kampala Open Beach Volleyball event in Kampala that was scheduled to take place from 23rd to 29th September were dumped, the national team will not be taking part in this year’s women volleyball African Cup of Nations to be held in Nairobi starting this Saturday due to financial constraints.
Uganda joins Botswana in late withdrawal from the competition despite their initial indication that they will be traveling to Nairobi.
Our sources at the Kenya Volleyball Federation tell us that KVF 1st National Vice Chairman Charles Nyaberi confirmed that nine teams without Uganda are expected to take part in this bi-annual event all with an eye fixed on the continental title currently being held by hosts Kenya who won it two years ago in Nairobi.
“It’s true, we will not be travelling to Nairobi due to lack of funds. We have tried sourcing around but time has not been on our side,” Uganda Volleyball Federation President Sadiq Nasiwu confessed to RED Pepper Online in a phone chat Thursday afternoon.
Nyaberi expressed KVF’s sadness and disappointment at the last-minute withdrawal of next-door sister Uganda and Botswana but said they look forward to a successful tournament.
This event will rekindle the perennial rivalry between hosts and defending champions, Kenya, African London Olympics representatives Algeria and powerhouses Cameroon, Tunisia and Egypt. The other countries expected for the Nairobi thriller are Senegal, DRC, Ethiopia and Gabon.
Tunisia was the first team to arrive in Nairobi on Wednesday.
