GOVT PRESS RELEASE: VP Ssekandi commends Church for complementing Government.

About 100 million shillings in cash and pledges was yesterday raised for the ongoing construction of St. Peters Nawanjiri church of Uganda in Butayunja subcounty in Mityana District.

The Vice President Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi who presided over the fundraising drive appreciated the church contribution to the socio-economic development of the country adding that the church has been a strong ally in complementing Government efforts towards service delivery.

Ssekandi who contributed six million shillings towards the construction, pledged more support to the three hundred million shilling project and urged the clergy to mobilise followers into activities that will improve household incomes which in turn, he said, will also support church activities.

Ssekandi also urged Christians to be exemplary and the salt of the world as taught in the holy scriptures by listening and respecting others and their views even when the views are not in line with one’s beliefs in order to promote peace, harmony and stability in their communities.

He said that God has talented humans differently and that human strength can only be realised when the different capacities are put together for the common good.

The Bishop Mityana Diocese, John Lubowa urged Christians to avoid the tensions created by the ongoing constitutional consultation against and for amendment but asked them to pray for sanctified discernment, soberness and logical reasoning to inform the decisions.

The Bishop called for support to complete the mega church project that will replace the old 50 seater structure constructed over 60 years ago and only renovated in 2008 increasing its seating capacity to 70.

The function was attended by Members of Parliament, business community groups from Kampala, local leaders and the religious leaders from the various denominations.
