Uganda police has refuted media reports from Hon. Amama Mbabazi camp that it is partisan in NRM wrangles as “false and aimed at misleading the public.”
In a press statement released yesterday evening, police spokesperson Fred Enanga noted that media has continued to publish such reports.
“Police has been consistent in explaining that nobody is against Hon. Amama Mbabazi’s bid for the presidency as long as this is done within the law. It is the responsibility of the police to enforce the laws of Uganda as well as maintain peace and security,” Enanga said in the statement.
He added; “Hon. Amama Mbabazi as well as Col. Kizza Besigye are alleging that the Inspector General of Police in particular and the police in general are partisan. This is a distortion of the facts. Enforcing the law as it is should not be interpreted as being partisan.”
For the case of Mbabazi, Enanga said he is seeking the presidency under the umbrella of NRM and that the party has come out that he should follow the laws and regulations of his party and the road map which the party has put up.
Enanga also hinted at the impasse surrounding Besigye’s last week meetings which were barred by Police.
“Concerning retired Col. Kizza’s meetings that were not allowed to proceed, the police has been engaging with the Party officials on this matter. The meetings did not comply with the provisions of Sect. 5 of the Public Order Management Act and so could not be allowed to proceed.”
He noted that the purpose of Besigye meetings was not clear and it was an individual member of FDC not the party who gave notice to the Police in respect of one candidate and he enlightened public that police has been engaging FDC and the two have arrived at a consensus.
“An interface with the relevant FDC officials reached a consensus where it was agreed that communication should be made by the chairperson FDC electoral commission explaining the purpose of the meetings and attach the program of activities in respect of the two FDC candidates competing to be the Party flag bearer,” Enanga said.
Yesterday, Police authorized FDC consultative meetings while NRM Mbabazi dilemma is still simmering.
