West Nile Gets First Mineral Water Plant

The first mineral water producing plant in West Nile is opening up in Nebbi town.

The Nile Tropical Mineral Water is the brainchild of former Nebbi Woman MP Betty Udongo.

According to Udongo, the first bottle of the mineral water will hit the market this March. The plant will produce mineral water bottles of 500 milimetres, a litre and one and a half litres.

Udongo says she was motivated to start the plant after the completion of Nyagak Dam which produces relatively stable power.
She said by the end of the year another plant producing juice will also be established.

Nebbi district produces lots of fruits like mangoes and oranges but much of it is wasted due to lack of value addition.

Udongo said once fully operational the plant will provide employment for about two-dozen people as well as business opportunities for many others.

She said apart from West Nile, she is also targeting the lucrative markets in northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan.

Chombe Mucek, the LC3 chairman of Nebbi Town Council, welcomed the move saying it will boost the town’s revenue base. He appealed to those with means, especially those in the Disapora, to set up business ventures in the town.

Once operational the Nile Tropical mineral plant would be the very first in West Nile.

Meanwhile, ever since Nyagak Dam came online a number of cottage industries are springing up. The most common ones are in food processing, carpentry and publishing.

A number of potential investors are also visiting the region exploring new business opportunities.
