WIFE TO FORMER ARCHBISHOP JANAN LUWUM DIES, AGED 93

Mary Lawinyo Luwum, wife to Janan Luwum the former Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Bonga Zaire who was martyred in Amin’s regime has died. Mary Luwum was 93 at the time of death, she said to have passed on at around 9 pm at international Hospital IHK) according to Archbishop Stanley Ntagali said.

Sadly, Mary Luhum has succumbed to cancer of the gallbladder and has left 6 children and many grandchildren. “With deep regret, Archbishop Stanley Ntagali has announced the death of Mama Mary Luwum, the wife of Church of Uganda’s martyred Archbishop Janan Luwum” a statement by the church of Uganda reads.

“Mama Mary has been a faithful witness to her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ for many years. Like her husband, her testimony has inspired many and will live on. We commend her to her Lord and pray for their family and all who grieve her passing” Archbishop Ntagali said.

The deceased will be remembered as not being ashamed of the gospel. She supported her husband’s decision to not flee Uganda when threatened by the former president of Uganda, Idi Amin. 

The decision that led to his martyrdom on February 16, 1977. In the 42 years following her husband’s assassination, she continued to dedicate her life to preaching the Gospel and supporting the social-economic growth of the Church of Uganda.

The church of Uganda recently dedicated Janan Luwum Church House commercial building on Kampala Road in Kampala is named after her husband. They shared a common vision for the self-sustaining and spiritually vibrant church.

Notably, in 2015, President  Museveni, declared February 16 a public holiday in memory of Archbishop Janan Luwum’s martyrdom and his faithful and sacrificial service to the church and the country.
