Uganda’s Chief Statistician Dr. Mukiza Scoops Rotary Award

Kampala — Dr. Chris N. Mukiza, the Executive Director of the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS), has been awarded the Rotary Vocational/Service Award by the Rotary E Club of Ntinda, in recognition of his outstanding leadership and service delivery to the nation through quality statistical work and commitment to professional excellence.

The Chief Guest Mike Sebalu, who is also the District Governor for D9213 and a member of the Rotary Club of Bukoto, while delivering his speech commended Dr. Mukiza for demonstrating a high standard of vocational service and one that aligns with Rotary’s fundamental principles of integrity, service above self, and building long-term value for communities.

He highlighted the critical role that statistics play in steering national development, explaining that accurate and timely data informs policy formulation, planning, budget projections, monitoring and ultimately guiding service delivery.

“Statistics are not just numbers, they are the foundation for decision-making,” Sebalu said, stressing that organizations such as UBOS help guide the country toward measurable progress.

He acknowledged Dr. Mukiza’s leadership as a driving force behind strengthening Uganda’s statistical systems and ensuring that the nation’s planning processes are supported by reliable evidence.

Hon. Sebalu alluded to the rigorous processes undertaken to select an awardee of this nature. He said several names are suggested by members, and these names are submitted before the board for review. After, the names are presented before the assembly for final decision. He noted that Dr. Mukiza has exceptionally delivered quality statistics at national, sub-regional up to the lowest level of administration which presents him as suitable candidate for the award. He, however, did not forget to mention that Dr. Mukiza is a member of the Rotary Club of Muyenga and a recognized Major Donor.

In his acceptance speech, Dr. Chris Mukiza expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Rotary E-Club of Ntinda for the honour. He described the award as an encouragement to continue strengthening Uganda’s statistical capacity and ensuring that the information generated by UBOS is robust, relevant, and responsive to national priorities.

“I am truly grateful to the Rotary E-Club of Ntinda for recognizing my service with the Rotary Vocational Award,” Dr. Mukiza said. “This award is not only for me personally, but it reflects the commitment of the Bureau and the spirit of collaboration that drives institutional excellence.”

Dr. Mukiza explained that Rotarians use statistics to complement the work of Government in different communities. He gave an example of the blood bank in Mengo Hospital and Cancer Unit established in Nsambya Hospital all aimed at improving the lives of citizens. He further emphasized that the Bureau has continuously strengthen the statistical ecosystem in Uganda to ensure availability of regular data for planning purposes.

He called upon the Bureau’s staff to join rotary clubs of their choices so that they are able to serve beyond themselves and widen their networks since rotary and statistics have a meeting point in line of service delivery.

The President of the rotary E-club of Ntinda Ann Kamugisa, commended Dr. Mukiza for his stewardship that has not only strengthened institutional credibility but has also played a vital role in shaping Uganda’s development agenda. “Through your leadership, the Uganda Bureau of Statistics has become a pillar of national planning, supporting government, private sector, and development partners,” she said.

She further said that the Service Award to Dr. Mukiza is a symbol of the Club’s appreciation for his outstanding contribution and a testament to the difference has created in the lives of many Ugandans.

The recognition service award ceremony took place at Statistics House in Kampala and attracted various Rotarians from other clubs within the Kampala Metropolitan Area.
