OPINION: America, Bring Back Bobi Wine – NUP Now a Headless Outfit

The leader of the national unity platform Robert Kyagulanyi has been held up in America since 18th March 2026. Leaving the party in the hands of his elderly deputy president. Bobi Wine wine suddenly appeared in the US after days of hiding claiming the security forces in Uganda were hunting for him. Since then he has been virtually leading his political party giving instructions on his X handle and other instructions on what’s app. His political party is orphaned with the media giving a helping hand to keep it relevant in the politics of the country by keeping it in the news.

Each time people ask the whereabouts of the NUP leader they’re they’re insulted or reminded how the state was hunting for him with aim killing him. One wonders if indeed the state didn’t know about his whereabouts and if they didn’t know how did he managed to leave the country without being notified by immigration. Meanwhile the same security apparatus managed to arrest the prison warder who killed four people in Kiboga and ran to DRC but somehow Bobi Wine managed to hide in Uganda and he was not found until he escaped.

America should free Bobi Wine and stop holding him incomunicado so that he comes back and takes control of his failing political party. He should come and offer leadership and guidance on who should be the next leader of opposition. It’s widely rumored that people are seriously lobbying for that position whose privileges are equal to deputy speakership of parliament.

We do not want to see a situation where the biggest opposition political is being swallowed up in a mere competition of who should be the next leader of opposition. It appears that fancy position of being given a government vehicle with security and budget is causing confusion in the corridors of power in the opposition. Who then will offer guidance and who will make the pronouncement?

Bobi Wine should be allowed to return home so that at least the political party he leads can produce a candidate for speakership of parliament. The race is now between Anita Among and Nobert Mao who signed an MOU with the NRM. This means that the two candidates are coincidentally known to the party in power the National Resistance Movement.

One wonders who will bring a divergent views in this speakership race. Who will be the Semuju Nganda of the 12th parliament to bring another version of the story? Is the interest of Bobi Wine only presidency or even parliament because there are three arms of government and for one to be president or she must be having control over the three arms of government because he’s the executive head of the country.

America should free Bobi Wine, because the Monday press conferences at the NUP headquarters no longer happen. The lady in charge seems to have forgotten her responsibility and the free coverage from the known media houses who offer free coverage and sympathy to the opposition. Maybe when Bobi Wine comes back there will be cleaning up of the NUP headquarters because its being widely said that the bushes are taking over the buildings. Because people no longer visit those offices for meetings and taking pictures.

We demand for the unconditional release of the NUP leader from America so that the government spokespersons can start working. So that they have time to respond to the questions raised from the alternative government.

He left lazy leaders in charge that the debate is now one sided with no one capable of giving another side of the story, since Medard Segona and Mathias Mpuuga were forcefully put into retirement.

Kyagulanyi should be allowed to return home so that personalities like Zaake Francis can get out of sleep. We last heard from the honorable Zaake long time ago and I feel this could be caused by the illegal keeping of Bobi Wine in the United States of America.

Bobi Wine should return home so that the opposition members of parliament can force themselves near him to be captured by the cameras. It appears the opposition members do not find the new leadership with the attention that Bobi Wine has and do not value the moments of having historical pictures with current leadership which is in charge of the party.

Who will be the leader the choir now if the chief singer is stuck on the US? Who will walk like the real Kibanda if the US doesn’t want to release the celebrated NUP leader who walks in a rhythm leaving every Getto yuti entertained and smiling. Who will be chief mourner at funerals organized by NUP? Who will the foot soldiers salute and sing bush war like songs? The honorable U.S should be kind enough and release Kyagulanyi Robert.
