Accra Mall Collapses, 50 People Rescued
President John Dramani Mahama says those responsible for the collapse of the six-storey Melcom Shopping Complex in Accra the capital of Ghana, opposite the Achimota Neoplan assembling plant will face the full force of the law if found guilty of negligence.
Addressing the media at the scene where the incident occurred, President Mahama said, “Whoever is responsible for this negligence will have to pay a price for what they have caused.”
He said in the mean time, the rescue team is doing all it can to save the lives of those who are stuck in the rubble. He expressed his condolences to the family of those who have perished and called on all Ghanaians to remain calm.
President Mahama accepted an offer from Israel to help locate and extract any remaining survivors. An 18-man team from Israel will arrive in the country today.
Dozens are feared dead but at least fifty-one people have so far been rescued from the rubble of the shopping center which collapsed on Wednesday morning 15 minutes after the shop opened for business.
Melcom Limited is Ghana’s largest chain of retail department stores.
President Mahama on Wednesday suspended his campaign in the Upper East Region and flew to Accra following news of the collapsed building. He has since visited some hospitals where the rescued workers and shoppers are recuperating.
