CORNERED! Vendors grill Mbarara Woman Mp over missing shs60m market cash
MP Margret Rwebyambu, Woman MP Mbarara District
Vendors in Mbarara District (Bwizibwera Roadside market) have ganged up against their Woman MP, Margaret Rwebyambu, over Shs60m which she allegedly collected towards the construction of their facility.
The market vendors alleged that in June 2022, the legislator organized a fundraising function towards the construction of the said market but there are no signs of the same since then. The fundraising function was reportedly meant to collect funds to support the construction of temporary structures at Bwizibwera Roadside market in Rwanyamahembe Town Council. Rwebyambu was able to mobilise thousands of locals, Members of Parliament from various constituencies including Premier Robina Nabanja as the chief guest. These were able to raise about Shs60m some in cash and pledges plus 200 iron sheets from Nabbanja.
However, after a whole one year, plans for the construction of this market have not seen the light of the day. Authorities, locals and vendors from this market have now tasked the legislator to account for the money claiming that it has not served the purpose for which it was collected.
During a recent ‘Ekiganiro Kyentunguuka’ that was held in Bwizibwera Town Council, the locals tasked Rwebyambu to explain the whereabouts of the money she collected during the said fundraising function but her response was not convincing. The locals said the MP is jeopardizing the delivery of services to the locals because she has failed to solve a small issue that concerns them.
Most of the locals accuse her of failing to implement even 5% of her manifesto in the two years since she was elected as MP for Mbarara District.
The locals have now vowed to show her where she belongs come 2026 polls. MP Nathan Itungo, the Kashari South MP confirmed that over Shs60m was collected and taken by MP Rwebyambu.
However, Itungo added that the plan for the construction of this market was sabotaged by the technical wing at the district. He said that before they construct the market on government land, there must be an approval from the District.
In her response, Rwebyambu admitted that she collected about 60M from the 17 MPs, locals and the Prime Minister. She also confirmed that the Prime Minister promised to deliver 200 iron sheets towards the construction of a temporary market in Rwanyamahembe Town Council.
She added that she decided to keep the money on her personal account after individuals in Mbarara District sabotaged the project.
