The opposition Forum for Democratic Change-FDC has resolved to support Brenda Nabukenya, the DP candidate in the Luweero District Woman By-elections.

The Luweero District Woman MP seat was declared vacant by the court of appeal, which found Electoral commission guilty of failure to comply with electoral laws when it failed to conduct a mandatory vote recount as requested by the loser Rebecca Nalwanga.

She filed an appeal for a vote recount after losing to Nabukenya by 30 votes. So far four aspirants including Brenda Nabukenya, the former MP, Rebecca Nalwanga, Ritah Mugalu and Lilian Nakate are eyeing the seat. Bwanika Bbale, the Luweero FDC chairperson says they have resolved not to field any candidate and instead mobilize support for Nabukenya.

He says Nabukenya is tested and ought to be given chance to complete her term. He says the by election is crucial for both the opposition and NRM because it reflects that thinking of residents in an area, which helped the current government to come to power in 1986.

Samuel Ssewanyana, the chairperson Uganda Federal Alliance Luweero district says they are also considering backing a joint candidate. Supporters of the ruling NRM party are still divided between holding primary elections and selecting a candidate. Rebecca Nalwanga, Ritah Mugalu and Lillian Nakate are all from NRM. Mugalu says there is need to elect a new party candidate arguing that Nalwanga can’t deliver the party to victory.
