Kiplimo Wins 10,000m race, Cheptegei Puts up fight in Ostrava
AGENCIES | Ostrava – Uganda’s Joshua Cheptegei fell short in his quest to break Daniel Komen’s 3000m world record, finishing the race in 7:33.24, a 2021 World Lead, at the Continental Tour in Ostrava on Wednesday May 19.
Earlier on Wednesday evening, his fellow countryman, world half-marathon champion Jacob Kiplimo impressed, winning the 10,000m in 26:33.93, the first man under 27 minutes this season.
There were two victories for Ethiopia: Getnet Wale was never challenged in the 3000m steeple, clocking a world lead of 8:09.47. Freweyni Hailu won the women’s 1500m in 4:04.20 while Genzebe Dibaba didn’t finish the race. Diribe Welteji placed second of the women’s 800m in 1:59.79, just 0.05 off her personal best from 2018.
World indoor record holder Hugues Fabrice Zango dominated the triple with a best jump of 17.20m while Nigeria’s Blessing Okagabare finished second in the women’s 200m (in 22.59, best African performance in 2021)
