Gunfire rocked Kabale town on Sunday as traders resisted their eviction from the weekly market at Esso Park.

It all started after Kabale municipal council law enforcement officers led by their commander Nathan Byebireoha raided Esso Park to evict the traders to pave way for their relocation to Bugongi Market in Northern Division.

The traders responded by assaulting the law enforcement officers as they tried to impound their merchandise. They pelted the law enforcement officers with stones forcing police to fire live bullets and tear gas to disperse them.

But this attracted other people such as Boda boda motorists leading to running battles with the cops, which lasted for close to an hour. The confusion forced traders along the Kabale –Kisoro road to close their shops while a few others lost their merchandise to hooligans who took advantage of the situation.

However, Police managed to quell the riot and picked up six suspects. In May this year, Kabale municipal council ordered the relocation of the traders from Esso Park, which hosts taxis plying the Kabale –Kisoro and Kabale –Kanungu routes. Our reporter was unable to get a comment from the municipality as Sunday wasn’t a working day.
