Mbarara Referral Hospital Boss Health Condition Worsens, fights for his life at home

MRRH ED Dr. Celestine Barigye on return from treatment
A recent visitor to the upcountry home of once-respected Executive Director of Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, Dr. Celestine Barigye, in Bushenyi District is worried that the country may lose the latter if nothing is done in the coming days.
Dr. Barigye has been on sick leave for over a year following brain tumor surgeries in 2023 at Mulago Hospital and later in Turkey.
However, his condition is yet to improve and his caretakers had been advised by the Ministry of Health to seek further medical treatment.
However, there are allegations that his wife of thirty years, Ruth Barigye Kapasa, is blocking this move.
A recent visitor who whispered to us and a long-time friend and mentor was initially denied entry to see Dr. Barigye but was eventually allowed in after insisting.
During the 30-minute visit, he is said to have been shocked by Dr. Barigye’s frail condition- fighting for his life. It is alleged that Barigye’s wife attempted to create the impression that her husband was taking medication for his brain tumor, which he had surgery for in 2023 at Mulago Hospital and later in Turkey.
However, it is claimed that she had actually burnt the prescribed medicine at pastor Kayanja church in Kampala, believing his condition to be spiritual rather than medical.

According to the source, Dr. Barigye had started recovering early last year but was forced to attend events and work overtime by his wife, which worsened his condition. When his health deteriorated, the Ministry of Health sent him on sick leave. However, the wife, with the help of pastors, allegedly created false narratives that people at the hospital were against him.
Some doctors at the hospital reportedly sent strong messages and advised her to allow Dr. Barigye to take his medication and stop pressuring him to attend balokole events. At home, Dr. Barigye is said to be traumatized by the situation, which is attributed to his wife’s actions.
A family member who fell out with Ms. Barigye after she refused to allow Dr. Barigye to seek medical assistance, claims that Dr. Barigye has been reduced to a gullible man on his deathbed, while the wife celebrates.
Those concerned now accuse the Ministry of Health and Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital of inaction. Family members, including children who call Dr. Barigye “uncle,” have been locked out of accessing him due to the wife’s actions.
The doctor’s friend concluded that unless serious intervention is done, Dr. Barigye’s days are numbered, and the wife has silenced even the children from speaking out.
The doctor who narrated this story while shedding tears stressed that what’s being committed by the wife is equivalent to murder but authorities have kept mum.
