Uganda Cranes opened their account of the CAF African Nations Championships on Sunday night in which they ran out 2-1 winners to place themselves at the pinnacle of the table.
Uganda will still have to face Zimbabwe and Morocco in their final two group matches, but Cranes coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic feels that the victory over the Burkinabes will act as a catalyst and that there is still more to learn.
“As a team we wanted to start the group by getting all three points,” says the 40-year-old.
“Those points [against Zimbabwe] will give us more motivation to go on and win the other games. So for us, it was very important to move forward from this win.
“We did not over-respect the Burkina Faso team that much because we knew what to expect and went out for three points. Winning the opening game is very important in such a tournament,” Micho added.
Uganda’s goals were both scored by the promising young forward Yunus Sentamu, who bagged one in each half and looked lively throughout.
The win Uganda’s first in CHAN took Micho’s team to top of the group after Zimbabwe and Morocco had settled for a goalless draw in an earlier match.
The Cranes return to action against Zimbabwe on Thursday January 16.
