Makerere University Vice Chancellor Prof. John Ddumba Ssentamu has decided to recall 15 students that had been suspended following intense pressure from the student’s body.
Ddumba yesterday suspended 15 students on grounds that they stole 200 forks, vandalized property, and poured cooked food last week as they were protesting against poor quality meals served at the university.
The students led by their Guild Leaders today stormed the main building protesting the suspension of their colleagues.
The students claim that their colleagues’ suspension was illegal, irrational, unjust and unconstitutional arguing that those suspended should have been given the right to a fair hearing.
In an abrupt meeting today with the student leaders following the strike, Prof. Ddumba agreed to recall students he suspended for allegedly stealing cutlery from the University hall’s kitchen.
The situation had turned violent at the University where students are now throwing stones at the police, but they also called off the strike immediately after reaching consensus with administration.
