Re-Opening Makerere is Useless – Kagonyera
By Serestino Tusingwire
Former Makerere University Chancellor, Prof. Mondo Kagonyera has said that re-opening the University will be a waste of time if lecturers who are the initial problem of the institute are not willing to come back.
Kagonyera revealed that the problems of Makerere are not unique but argued that the more it remains closed, the more the Students suffer and the University Projects which have a time frame will be ruined.
He says the new committee should do the work of refreshing government minds on what the previous reports say and help put the recommendations into use.
Kagonyera also pointed at Financing as one major problem which will be hard to deal away with saying it cuts across even to America.
Meanwhile, he has refuted allegations that the University is in a mess arguing that it’s just a hiccup which the new committee will solve.
On Nov. 1st 2016, the president, pursuant to the powers vested in him by the Constitution and Section 26(2) of the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act 2001 as amended, decided to close Makerere University with immediate effect.
This came on the heels of persistent strikes that affected the proper functioning of the university.
