UCDA Hands Over Espresso Machines, Grinders, Pruning Saws to Promote Coffee Consumption, Value Addition
The Minister of State for Agriculture in the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, Hon. Fred Bwino Kyakulaga today officiated at the handover of 20 espresso machines, 20 grinders and 3,000 pruning and bow saws for coffee stumping to stakeholders at the UCDA coffee laboratory in Lugogo.
This is intended to drive up coffee consumption, promote value addition and support the ongoing coffee rehabilitation programme.
“To grow the number of coffee consumers, we need to reach out to the youth and the growing middle class to promote the culture,” Hon. Kyakulaga told the recipients. “In Uganda, we see growth and opportunities in the domestic market which we need to harness.”
The Minister handed over the machines worth UGX 400m to various institutions, including 12 institutions of higher learning; Uganda Christian University, Makerere University, Kampala International University, Uganda Martyrs University – Nkozi, Mountains of the Moon University, Gulu University, Lira University, Muni University, Busitema University, Mbarara University of Science and Technology, Islamic University in Uganda and the Hotel and Tourism Institute, Jinja.
Five government institutions, namely, Office of the Prime Minister, State House (Nakasero and Entebbe), Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, National Leadership Institute and one private sector player, Achys Café also received espresso machines.
Dr. Emmanuel Iyamulemye, the UCDA Managing Director requested the beneficiaries especially the institutions of learning to utilise the espresso machines to support skills development among youth so that as they leave the university, they have the requisite skills to get jobs in the coffee sub sector. Domestic coffee consumption is growing and currently stands at approximately 300,000 60 kg bags which is 4% of production.
The Minister also handed over pruning and bow saws for coffee stumping and rehabilitation to coffee farmers from the Central region of Uganda. The support will be rolled out to all coffee growing regions in the country.
This initiative is part of UCDA’s drive to accelerate domestic coffee consumption, support skills development programmes for youth in coffee and improve production and productivity by promoting stumping of rehabilitation of old coffee trees in the country.
