A canoe has capsized in Lake Nakuwa in Kaliro district killing 10 people on board. The incident occurred on Monday night as the victims were sailing from Bugolyo landing site in Kaliro to Opeta landing site in Pallisa capsized.

Some of the deceased have been identified as Engorotum Baga, Lovisa Kyakuwaire, David Opolot, John Bagaba and Katono Dezilanta, all from Kamuli district. Others are Aisha Mukyoyaya, Anna Bogere, her son Martin Bogere, one – year – old Florence Kuuyo.

Samuel Assimwe, the Kaliro district police commander says that the canoe capsized after being hit by strong winds near Bugolyo fishing village in Nawaikoke Sub-County. He blames the disaster on over loading and failure by the victims to use life jackets.

12-year-old Alfred Musana, a survivor of the accident says there were 13 people, luggage and a Bajaj boxer on board when the canoe capsized.  Wycliffe Ibanda, the Kaliro LC V chairperson, Musana and two other unidentified men were rescued by fishermen who heard them calling for help they swam to safety.

Dan Alinange, the spokesperson Uganda National Roads Authority – UNRA blames the rampant accidents on water bodies on failure by travelers to follow safety guidelines stipulated by the transport ministry.
