Closure fears as massive staff exodus rocks Nytil

All is not well at Nyanza Textile Industries Ltd or Nytil.

We are told soon the garment makers may scale down operations if not already or cease completely if the current situation is not reversed.

Highly placed sources whispered to this publication that staff exodus has reached worrying levels and in turn it is affecting operations.

According to insiders, the employees are exiting en-masse and cuts across all departments.

That whereas the exit bug first caught junior staff and casual laborers, it has now extended to senior staff including managers.

This has reportedly affected operations at the main factory in Buikwe and several outlets including Kampala.

“Everyone is worried. Even the bosses don’t know what is happening and what could be a reason. It is something that is worrying everyone. Bosses are confused. They don’t know what to do. They are contemplating even involving police to come in and investigate,” an insider revealed.

However, another source attributes the employee turnover to low salary, failure to pay salary in time, sexual harassment, mistreatment, and lack of promotion and among others.

This is a story for another day about the rot at Nytil.

However, another source points at financial issues at the garment factory. And quick staff exit is being looked at as a cover-up to avoid detection as we shall also be revealing in our subsequent publication.

There are rumours that the company may even wind very soon.

In 2022 there were reports of Picfare Trading Company Limited, Parkinson Clarke Limited and Southern Nytil Garments Limited Nytil winding up business in Uganda.

However, a statement by Richard D Mubiru, the corporate Affairs director at Picfare group of companies said the companies being wound up then had been dormant and that by being closed, they were only doing it formally.

“All active group companies like Southern Range Nyanza Limited, Picfare Industries Limited and Henley Property Developers Limited are fully functional and shall remain serving you as always. There is therefore no need to be worried of missing out on any of the group brands and services,” Mubiru said.

Nyanza Textile Industries was established in 1954, by the colonial government as a parastatal company and the independent governments in Uganda ran the factory until 1996 when they sold it to Southern Range Nyanza Limited, the company that runs it today.

Nytil has for long been manufacturing government institutions garments including uniforms for the UPDF. Recently they scooped a deal to export army uniforms and accessories for the Equatorial Guinea army.

They also manufacture Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), Fabrics, Uniforms, Bedsheets, and T-shirts among others.
