BIG BLOW! Zimbabwe back-pedals from Rugby Cranes Victoria Cup Clash
Kampala – The Victoria Cup match between Uganda and Zimbabwe rugby union sides will not be happening on Saturday, 30th July as scheduled. This comes after the latter pulled out just a day to the game.
“The Zimbabwe Rugby Union regrets to inform the nation that the Victoria Cup game against the Uganda Cranes…has been shelved. This is due to circumstances beyond our immediate control,” a letter dated 29th, July read.
However, Zimbabwe remain hopeful that this game will be played at a later date convenient to both unions, Zimbabwe Rugby and Uganda Rugby.
However, this development is a big blow for Uganda Rugby because Zimbabwe is the second side to cancel a game against the Cranes after Kenya back-pedaled from this year’s Elgon Cup whose first leg was initially meant to be played tomorrow at Legends Grounds in Kampala.
The idea of the Victoria Cup was brought in to make up for the cancellation of the Elgon Cup and now the halting of the former is a big blow for Uganda.
Preparations for the Victoria Cup were in high gear and now the organisers and service providers are bound to make losses.
A press conference for the tournament was held on Tuesday at Legends, tickets were sold, service providers and musicians were contracted and other businesses were engaged to ensure the event is a success.
However, Uganda Rugby Union is hopeful that the event will happen in the near future but they’re planning to host a XVs national team even if it’s not Zimbabwe.
The Rugby Cranes last played in front of the home crowd in 2019 during the home legs of the Rugby Africa Cup.
