Broke Uganda Netballers Thump Zambia In World Cup Qualifiers Opener

For a whole national team that left with a trifling Shs100,000 as upkeep money to the 2014 Africa Netball Championship in Gaborone, She Cranes, who won the Six Nations Cup, spurred by captain, Peace Proscovia yesterday won their in an opening fixture against Zambia.

Zambia, who held Uganda 28-28 in the first quarter, failed to maintain the rhythm in the second stanza as Uganda stamped their authority.

“We believe we are capable,” She Cranes captain, Peace Proscovia told Daily Monitor before leaving for Botswana. “We have been training for some time and we cannot give up now but go on to fight for the crown. Despite the financial constraints the whole team is ready, however, the officials had to trim the squad to 12.”

The tournament, which initially had two groups, will be played on a round robin basis following the last minute withdrawal of Tanzania and Kenya.

The six teams will play five games, with the top two qualifying for the World Cup slated for August 7-16 in Sydney.

Uganda was the first African country to participate in the Netball World Cup also known as the World Netball Championship in Trinidad & Tobago in 1979.

The Southern Caribbean country hosted the fifth edition of the event and Uganda was one of the 19 countries that participated. In the end, the trio of Australia, New Zealand and Trinidad and Tobago shared the title.

African champions South Africa and Malawi have already qualified for the World Cup.
