COUGH IT! Rwampara MP Kankunda in trouble over missing fundraising cash for hospital
By Amos Tayebwa
Rwampara County Mp Amos Kankunda is on spot over missing millions meant for the construction of a maternity ward at Kinoni Health Center IV.
Kankunda is accused of failure to release the money that was raised on a fundraising function by the residents and the District Leaders from Rwampara District, Members of parliament and other well wishers.
The concern was raised by a group of councilors from Rwampara District last week during a council meeting.
These councilors tasked their District LC5 Chairman to put Kankunda to task and explain to the public why he has refused to release the money that was given to him.
In July 2021, there was a mega fundraising function that was held at Kinoni Girls SS, Kinoni TC in Rwampara District with a purpose of raising funds in support of constructing a General Ward and a Maternity ward mainly at Kinoni Health Center IV. This function was organised by the area Member of Parliament Amos Kankunda in collaboration with the District Leadership.
About shs87m was raised from the fundraising. It is also alleged that MP Kankunda received about USD10,0000 from a certain Organisation which he has not released to do its intended work at the facility.
Jotham Mwesigwa, Rwampara district Speaker says Kankunda have been summoned sofar three times to give his side but is yet to comply.
“Our MP of Rwampara County Amos Kankunda collected money from us and our people, we don’t even know the actual figure of how much he collected but it’s a lot of money and he has not released it to do its mandated work. The construction of the maternity ward at Kinoni Health Center IV has already commenced. The construction is being done by the Government money that we passed in our council as supplementary budget of shs670M. Kankunda must know that the money that was raised from the fundraising function was people’s money and we suspect that he might be attempting to use this money for his personal businesses. We shall not beg Kankunda to bring this money, as a district we shall try to solicit funds and ensure that the construction of our Health Centre Maternity Ward and the General ward are completed. But he will give accountability on how such public money was used,” said Mwesigwa, the Speaker Rwampara District.
Kankunda could not be reached for a comment by press time. DEAR READER, DO YOU HAVE A HOT STORY? CALL/TEXT/WHATSAPP 0777959024 OR EMAIL: [email protected] WITH AS MUCH EVIDENCE AS POSSIBLE.
