Ekiring, Bangi Wins Set Ball Rolling In Mauritius International Open

Uganda’s top players Edwin Ekiring and Bridget Shamim Bangi registered wins in the 2014 Yonex Mauritius International Badminton Open Championship played last night.

The Holland-based Ekiring who beat Vishal Sawaram (Mauritius) 21-8, 21-14 to book a date with Germany’s Tobias Wadenka in the second round. The former African top ranked player told reporters after the game that he had played well, but was waiting for a tough second round game on Friday.

Bangi who won bronze in the Nigeria International Challenge last week also saw off a Mauritius player Smiti Ramchurn 21-5, 21-6. She will face another home based player Sandrale Grange in the second round tonight, before qualifying for the quarter finals where she is likely to face experienced Egyptian player Hadia Hosny.

Another Ugandan player Aisha Nakiyimba was relegated to a spectator’s status after losing to Malaysia’s Julia Pei Xian Wong 21-9, 21-5 in the first round of the women’s category.

Jan Frohlich from the Czech Republic is the top seed for the men’s singles. The event has also attracted players from; Nigeria, United States, France Canada, Botswana, South Africa, Ghana, Austria, Italy, Israel, Slovakia, New Zealand and Egypt.
