EU Clears $4.9m UPDF Salary Arrears

European Union has finally cleared salary arrears of Ugandan troops serving in war-torn Somalia amounting to $4.9m.

The Chief of Defense Forces, Gen. Katumba Wamala confirmed the news on Sunday evening thanking EU for fulfilling its obligation of ensuring welfare of AMISOM troops.

“EU has transferred to BOU $4.9m (about Shs18bn) as salary arrears (January to September 2016) for Ugandan troops serving in.” Gen. Katumba said.

Soldiers under AMISOM are paid a mission allowance of $1,028 (about Shs3.7m) every month. Currently, there are 6,223 Ugandan soldiers in Somalia.

In June this year, Uganda threatened to withdraw its troops from Somalia after the EU cut its annual allocation to AMISON by 20%, claiming budgetary constraints and the emergence of other conflicts on the continent had thinned its Africa Peace Fund.

It was later convinced to leave their troops until Somalia is totally secured.
