Hamis Kiiza Scores First But Uganda Fall To Zambia

KizitoGoing into Wednesday’s International friendly against former African Champions Zambia, Uganda Cranes coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic let slip that he was going for revenge but to test his side that eventually went down to a spirited 2-1 defeat at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.

Two second half goals by Evans Kangwa were enough to cancel out substitute Hamis Kiiza’s 53rd minute strike.

Zambia started brightly and made several attempts at the goal, but Dennis Onyango was steady for the Uganda. Emmanuel Okwi’s cross was also missed by Daniel Sserunkuma for the Cranes’ best chance.

On resumption, the CECAFA giants returned strongly after bringing on Kiiza for Okwi and Robert Odonkara for Onyango in goal.

The Young Africans (Tanzania) striker back-heeled a well taken Isaac Muleme cross past substitute goalkeeper Toaster Nsabata after Kennedy Mweene had been stretchered off.

On 65 minutes Kangwa made it 1-1 with a neat header after a well taken Chisamba Lungu free kick. Eleven minutes later Kangwa, who had become a threat to the Ugandan defenders, picked up his second with a volley past Odonkara.

Chipolopolo soon camped inside Uganda’s own half, with Rainford Kalaba, Chisamba and Nathan Sinkala dominating the middle of the park.

The two coaches made several changes, but there were no more goals. It was the first home win for Zambia’s new coach Patrice Beaumelle.

In their last meeting Uganda beat Zambia 1-0 at the Mandela Nations Stadium in Kampala, but the Chipolopolo went on to qualify for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations on a penalty shootout. Zambia had won the first leg 1-0 in Ndola.
