Obumu: Female Empowerment through Song and Dance

Obumu – oneness, unity. Whether separated by borders, by oceans, or by our individual egos, at our core, we all come from the same Mother Earth. Raíces del Mundo (Roots of the World), Avie Music and Teens Ministry Uganda have joined forces to empower female youth through song and dance.
This project primarily serves an all-female dance group in Kawaala, on the outskirts of Kampala, Uganda, with the impact radiating from there. Through empowerment trainings, song production, dance classes, video production, and project promotion, the youth experience the journey from brainstorming to composition to production to promotion.
Becky Roberts, founder and international coordinator of Raíces del Mundo, worked together with Brian Avie to incorporate the ideas the youth shared during the trainings into song lyrics to uplift communities. Avie added his arrangement and vocal talent, along with Gasta on the beats, to create the song Obumu.
The youth express themselves by choosing steps for the dance choreography.  Soon we will have the song and dance video to share with you, available on the Raíces del Mundo YouTube channel. This project is made possible by a grant from The Mountain School, with additional support from Raíces del Mundo, Avie Music and friends. Together for a better world, together as one.
