Omony Braces Up for Malawi Friendly

Brian-UmonyTanzanian-based striker Uganda striker Brian Umony, has said he is looking forward to be part of Cranes’ starting eleven in July 14’s international friendly against Malawi at Namboole five days before facing Equatorial Guinea in the final round of the 2015 Nations Cup preliminary qualifiers.

Omony said the Uganda Cranes will treat the friendly with Malawi seriously and “like a Nations Cup qualifier” too.

The Azam FC man is also wary that the Malawians will not be a easy ride for the Cranes. He is among the 22 Cranes players summoned by coach Micho Sredojevic as the team begin preparations for the first leg of the final preliminary round of the qualifiers.

He also believes that facing Malawi is a good test for the Cranes team, preparing for qualifier at Mandela National Stadium.

“There are no more easy games these days and that’s why we are taking this game seriously. Though it is a friendly we’ll take it like a Nations Cup qualifier. Malawi might not be one of the big names in African football but playing against them is good for us and for our exposure too.

“Right now we are focused on preparing well and also hope to do very well against Equatorial Guinea. We cannot afford to let ourselves down or let down our country and coach (Micho Sredojevic) who has been a great leader of this team,” said Omony to Red Pepper Online.

Fufa Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Edgar Watson also welcomed the development: “We are glad to land this friendly because it will come at the most appropriate time when the Cranes are tuning up for the game against Equatorial Guinea,” Watson told the federation website.

Uganda face Equatorial Guinea on July 19 while Malawi play Benin the same weekend as both nations continue the journey to Morocco 2015.

The Cranes have since Monday been training at Lugogo. They start the first of two regional tours, also part of the build-up to the Afcon qualifier, on Saturday.

Micho leads his men to the Western district in Mbarara on Saturday where they will play an exhibition game against a selected local side before proceeding to Soroti, Eastern Uganda, next weekend.

The squad:  Robert Odongkara, Benjamin Ochan, Ismail Watenga, Nicholas Wadada, Denis Guma, Isaac Muleme, Brian Majwega, Richard Kassaga, Savio Kabugo, Isaac Isinde, Murushid Jjuko, Ivan Ntege, Allan Kyambadde, Muzamil Mutyaba, Gadaffi Kiwanuka, Faruk Miya, William Wadri, Joseph Ochaya, Emmanuel Okwi, Hamis Kiiza, Brian Umony, Francis Olaki and Yunus Sentamu.
