PLE FALLOUT! Parents’ fury as their children fail to score Agg:4 in so called ‘top schools’ despite exorbitant fees

In the recently released 2023 PLE results, something unusual was observed and some parents are not happy.

Little known, rural/upcountry or newly started schools registered a good number of candidates with Aggregate 4.

For instance, a new school called New Jerusalem P/S-Kasangati-Bulamu started in 2022. Only 6 students registered and sat for PLE in 2023. This was their first year of sitting.

However, out of 6 candidates, 5 got first grade (one with Aggregate 4); and 1 second grade who scored 13 Aggregates.

Newly started New Jerusalem PS, Bulamu-Kasangati PLE stars celebrating with their teachers. Out of 6 pioneer candidates in 2023, 5 got first grade with one scoring 4Agg and 1 second grade that scored 13Agg.

However, it beats parents’ understanding that well established schools like Kampala Parents, Green Hill, Hill side and others where they pay exorbitant fees, cannot register as many candidates as possible with Aggregate 4.

And they are now seething with anger and many are considering changing schools.

In our contemporary Uganda, good PLE grades is the surest ticket to good secondary schools like Namugongo, Buddo, SMACK, Namilyango, Gayaza among others and short of this, using back doors is always an expensive and risky maneuver.

As we report this many parents are demanding answers from these top schools before they can continue taking their kids there.

WIDER PICTURE

The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) announced last Thursday that the number of candidates who scored in Divisions One and Two in the 2023 Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) has seen a slight decrease compared to the previous year.

However, UNEB Executive Director Daniel Odong highlighted a positive trend, noting an increase in the number of candidates achieving Division 3 and above compared to 2022 results. Overall, Mr. Odong reported that the pass rate remains consistent with last year, at 88.0%.

“A higher proportion of the 2023 candidates passed in Division 3 and above level. Overall, the performance of candidates is comparable to that of 2022,” Mr Odogo said.

Encouragingly, the examination body also registered a decline in the number of ungraded candidates in the 2023 PLE results.

“Division U (Ungraded) is awarded to candidates who have failed to reach the minimum level of performance that can be awarded at least a Division 4 They are not eligible for admission to the Senior 1 class. It should be noted that the number of candidates in Division U is quite high, at 88,269 (10.4%) and should raise concern so that they do not just add to the statistics of school drop-outs,” he said.
