Sunday School Teacher Nabbed Stealing Church Offertory

A Sunday School teacher has been arrested for stealing church tithe. Umar Kizito (18) was arrested by police in Luweero after stealing 400, 000 shillings.

The money belonged to Restoration Assembly Church in Luweero town. The money was stolen from church leader Lydia Nakato’s house.

Tithe is one tenth of annual produce or earnings, taken as a tax from believers for the support of the church and the clergy.

Kizito has been holding Sunday school classes at Restoration Assembly Church for children.

Topher Gimei, the Luweero Criminal Investigations Intelligence Department, says Kizito was picked up from his one room rented house in Binyonyi zone in Luweero town council.

Police was tipped off by Nakato that Kizito was the likely culprit in the break-in into her house. Nakato’s house was broken into on Friday at around 12:00pm while she was away.

Nakato says she suspected Kizito to be behind the robbery because she had informed him that she kept some of the tithe in her house. Although the robbers had bored a hole through the side of her house, they did not take any property apart from the money kept in a bag.

Police believe Kizito may have been working with others during the robbery. Kizito, under arrest, said that he was forced to break into Nakato’s house for the money because he has financial difficulties.

Pastor Moses Mwesigye, the leader of the church, tells URN that Kizito was already under investigation for the disappearance of other church equipment a few weeks ago.

Gimei says Kizito will be charged with theft.
