Former Forum for Democratic Change president Dr. Kiiza Besigye and embattled Kampala city Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago have been arrested by the Uganda police.

Besigye was arrested at the Old Taxi park in Kampala where he intended to address a rally while Lukwago whose home had been cordoned off was arrested as he tried to force his way out.

Besigye is being held at the Central Police Station (CPS) in the capital Kampala. Lukwago’s whereabouts are unknown.

Police used tear gas to disperse Besigye’s supporters who turned rowdy as the force’s officers towed his car to CPS.

The police had earlier cordoned off Lukwago’s home to prevent him from leaving after he vowed to go ahead with plans to hold a stakeholders’ meeting that police has since blocked.

Early this week, Lukwago and Moses Kasibante, the Lubaga North MP wrote notifying police of their intentions to convene a consultative meeting.

It came after police blocked two other previous attempts by Lukwago to convene stakeholders, the first since his controversial impeachment.

In a statement issued yesterday afternoon, Judith Nabakooba, the Police spokesperson insists that Lukwago does not have powers to organize a meeting as a lord mayor.

Lukwago was impeached by a section of councilors following a KCCA tribunal report, which implicated him for alleged incompetence and failure to conduct council business. However, High Court judge, Justice Yasin Nyanzi later ruled that the council resolution was unlawful saying it was made in disregard of a court injunction blocking the sitting.
