UPDF Soldier Arrested over Missing Gun

The army in Moroto district is holding one of its own; a UPDF soldier who lost his official gun while on duty over the weekend.

Lance Corporal Zephaniah Muitwe (RA/170741) attached to battalion 31 is being held at Moroto barracks quarter-guard after his rifle no. 56-034068 with 30 rounds of ammunition went missing.

Surprisingly the soldier says he does not know whether the gun was stolen or where and how it was abandoned.

Capt. Denis Omara, the UPDF 3rd Division spokesperson confirms the loss of the gun without divulging details. He however confirms that the soldier is in custody awaiting his fate as the intelligence team digs deeper into the mysterious disappearance of the weapon.

Over 10 guns have gone missing in a space of two years in the districts of Napak, Moroto, Nakapiripirit and Amudat districts. However none of them has been recovered.

In another development, tension remains high at the Kenya-Uganda border as members of the Pokot communities in the two neighboring countries plot an attack on the Turkana pastoralists grazing in Moroto district.

Security sources said that military intelligence staffs have also been deployed heavily to monitor the situation and avert a possible bloodshed
